SUMMARY:International Day to Protect Education from Attack
DESCRIPTION:The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 9 September the International Day to Protect Education from Attack in 2020. The announcement coincided with the fifth anniversary of the Safe Schools Declaration\, an inter-governmental commitment led by Norway and Argentina to protect education at all levels. Resolution 74/275 was introduced by the State of Qatar\, co-sponsored by 60 states\, and adopted by consensus. GCPEA recognises the leadership of H.H. Sheikha Moza Bint Nasser\, the Founder of Education Above All Foundation\, in calling for this resolution\, which provides a unique annual opportunity for mobilization to protect education from attack.

It is delivered as part of the State-led Implementation Network on the Safe Schools Declaration. \nRepresentatives from the Ministries of Education\, Defence and Foreign Affairs from approximately 25 endorsing states have been invited to participate\, with a mix of states that are affected by armed conflict and attacks on education\, and those that can play a role in promoting SSD implementation at the global and regional level. \nThe training is aimed at encouraging participants to share knowledge and experience in protecting education during conflict and insecurity\, through a series of practical exercises\, case studies\, and group discussions. It will provide participants with a solid understanding of the Safe Schools Declaration and introduce them to the existing tools and resources to support their efforts in implementing the Declaration’s commitments.

El informe – cuyo contenido completo puedes encontrar en este enlace – muestra una realidad preocupante: el número de violaciones graves contra la infancia afectada por conflictos ha aumentado de manera desproporcionada al número de niños y niñas viviendo en zonas de conflicto. Esto muestra la profunda erosión de las normas internacionales destinadas a proteger a la infancia.

DESCRIPTION:As part of the 24th Meeting of the 61st session of the Human Rights Council (HRC61)\, an Interactive Dialogue with the Special Representative of the Secretary-General (SRSG) for Children and Armed Conflict will take place on 10th March 2026. The session is scheduled to begin in the morning and will focus on the urgent need to protect the rights of children caught in global hostilities. \nKey interventions \nThe Global Coalition to Protect Education from Attack (GCPEA)\, in collaboration with Save the Children\, will be delivering a Joint Statement during the dialogue. This statement will advocate for stronger international protections against school attacks and the military use of educational facilities. \nAdditionally\, the Core Group on the Safe Schools Declaration (SSD) will present a Joint Statement to be delivered by Norway. SUMMARY:State-to-State Exchange\, Abuja\, Nigeria 12-14 May 2026
DESCRIPTION:From 12 to 14 May 2026\, the Government of Nigeria hosted a State-to-State Exchange on the Safe Schools Declaration in Abuja\, held within the State-led Implementation Network on the Safe Schools Declaration. Delegations from the Democratic Republic of Congo\, Mozambique\, Somalia and Nigeria\, with Education Cluster members and Save the Children staff\, including from Ethiopia\, spent three days sharing experiences of protecting education from attack. The African Union Special Envoy on Children Affected by Armed Conflict\, Ambassador Jainaba Jagne\, took part. Participants visited the National Safe Schools Response Coordination Centre\, the Nigeria Police Force Headquarters and the Federal Ministry of Education to see how Nigeria coordinates the prevention of and response to attacks on schools. SUMMARY:Protecting Education: Good practices in implementation and coordination
DESCRIPTION:Attacks on education and military use of schools and universities keep disrupting learning and putting students and educators at risk. Education under Attack 2026 recorded at least 9\,259 attacks on education and incidents of military use in 2024–2025\, more than 50% more than in 2022–2023\, harming over 10\,600 students\, teachers and education personnel. Military use of schools and universities more than doubled\, to over 2\,100 cases. \nNo single actor can prevent and respond to these attacks alone. Governments\, humanitarian clusters\, especially Education and Protection\, and local partners need to coordinate\, and the work needs adequate\, predictable funding. The Safe Schools Declaration gives states a political framework for this\, and the Global Education Cluster’s guidance note on Systematizing Approaches for Attacks on Education helps cluster coordinators build attacks on education into the humanitarian programme cycle. \nThis 90-minute webinar is organised by the State-led Implementation Network on the Safe Schools Declaration (SSD Network)\, led by Norway and GCPEA\, together with the Global Education Cluster and the Global Protection Cluster.
