February 2017: Meeting with GVA mission. Very good meeting. He asked lots of intelligent questions about the process and substance that indicated that he got the issue, understood the role of such a declaration, and was interested in what it would achieve. But was very honest and direct that with the current political situation in Macedonia (elections last December, but still no governing coalition formed, and even if there was a government today there would be no chance of making a decision about endorsement by end of March, and probably no funding to send someone that far anyway. I emphasized that attendance was open to anyone interested in the topic even if they wouldn’t endorse, and suggested that maybe someone from their embassy in Brazil could attend. He entertained that possibility. He said he’d love to hear from Argentina and Norway on the Declaration too, to get their state-perspective. So, maybe not a priority for now, but I think there’s an opening to go back after Buenos Aires and when there’s a new government. Again, lovely follow up email.
March 2017: Attended Buenos Aires Conference on Safe Schools.
September 2017: The Mission in New York contacted GCPEA enquiring if a side event on the Declaration would take place in the margins of the UNGA. GCPEA is following up to request a meeting in New York.
June 2018: Zama met with the Deputy Permanent Reprsentative, Tanja Dinevska, who was receptive to endorsing the declaration and will pass along the ask to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. She had some familiarity with the SSD, but noted that she hadn’t been contacted about endorsing it. Macedonia will not make statement at CAAC debate, as Dinevska will soon be operating mission alone. Macedonia has co-sponsored Youth, Peace and Security Resolution with Sweden.
March 2019: Clustered Interactive Dialogue with the SRSG Ms. Virginia Gamba, HRC Geneva:referred to the issue of attacks on/or and military use of schools.
May 2019: during the UN Security Council Open Debate on Protection of Civilians in Armed Conflict referred to the Safe Schools Declaration.
October 2021: cosponsored UNSRC2601.
