2015: Attended the state consultations on the SSD in Geneva – led by Norway + 2015: Present at the First International Conference on the SSD in Oslo.
May 2017: Save the Children Denmark and UK participated in a planning exercise at the NATO training center in Poland. They presented the Declaration and Guidelines to the participants and provided input into training tools which will be used for the training of 900 officers in September. Save the Children will continue this engagement and advocate for the Guidelines to be built into future training exercises.
June 2017: GCPEA wrote to Poland to encourage peer advocacy towards Ukraine, highlighting the foreign ministry’s public statement expressing concern over attacks on schools in Ukraine.
September 2017 UNSC: GCPEA sent a letter to the ambassador in New York asking to raise the issue on attacks and military use, draw attention to the Declaration and the Guidelines during the Open Debate on children and armed conflict.
March 2018: PEIC met with the embassy in Doha to discuss their priorities for UN Security Council membership, highlight the upcoming release of Education Under Attack 2018, and suggest that they host a briefing on the Declaration for the diplomatic community in Doha. Poland is planning an Arria meeting on action plans by parties to armed conflict to end violations against children during their Presidency of the Security Council in May.
May 2018: Zama met with Second Secretary Bogna Ruminowicz.Receptive to idea of bilateral outreach, specifically to Peru, Bolivia, Kuwait, Ruminowicz will consult with DPR. Poland will consult with Sweden about mentioning SSD in resolution. Ruminowicz was optimistic about strength of resolution, mentioned a “consensus” and “lots of understanding” among Security Council states.
July 2018: UNSC Open Debate on children and armed conflict. 1) Joined Argentina’s joint statement to the UN SC during the open debate on children and armed conflict. 2) Co-sponsored resolution 2427 (2018). 3) Mentioned and welcomed the Safe Schools Declaration during the statement to the SC. 4) Joined the statement of Canada on behalf of the GoF which mentioned the Safe Schools Declaration.
October 2018: Poland invited others to endorse; emphasised their support for protection of the rights of the child and said they had referred to the Declaration in discussions on this topic. Also referred to the Paris and Vancouver Principles.laration.
March 2019: attended GCPEA side-event on “Better Protecting Women and Girls from Attacks on Education” in Geneva. Clustered Interactive Dialogue with the SRSG CAAC Virginia Gamba, HRC Geneva: joined Norway’s joint statement on the Safe Schools Declaration.
May 2019: Participated in the Third International Conference in Palma.
October 2021: cosponsored UNSRC2601.
July 2022: At the UNSC CAAC debate :
– Condemn attacks on schools in the context of Russian invasion
– Must put an end to attacks on schools and military use of schools
