Details

2015: Attended the state consultations on the SSD in Geneva – led by Norway + 2015: Present at the First International Conference on the SSD in Oslo.

February 2017: Costa Rica hosted a GRULAC briefing in Geneva, at which Argentina and GCPEA provided an update on the conference and implementation of the Declaration.

March 2017: Attended Buenos Aires Conference on Safe Schools. Provided a moderator for a panel discussion.

April 2017: Attended post-conference briefing for missions in New York. September 2017 UNSC: GCPEA sent a letter to the Ambassador in New York asking to raise the issue on attacks and military use, draw attention to the Declaration and the Guidelines and to mention the AU call to endorse during the Open Debate on children and armed conflict.

July 2018: Joined Argentina’s joint statement to the UN SC during the open debate on children and armed conflict. Co-sponsored resolution 2427 (2018).Mentioned and welcomed the Safe Schools Declaration during the statement to the SC. Costa Rica also joined the statement of Canada on behalf of the GoF which mentioned the Safe Schools Declaration.

May 2019: Participated in the Third International Conference in Palma.

August 2019: endorsed the Vancouver Principles.

October 2021: cosponsored UNSRC2601.

November 2022: Endorsed the Political Declaration on Strengthening the Protection of Civilians from the Humanitarian Consequences Arising from the Use of Explosive Weapons in Populated Areas (EWIPA) on 18 November during an International Conference hosted by Ireland, the leader and penholder behind the Declaration.

November 2022: On 14 November, Nevena met with the Ambassador in Geneva. The purpose of the meeting was to encourage Costa Rica to promote the protection of education as part of their membership of the Human Rights Council (2023-2025). She seemed very supportive, and we outlined that a priority for them is the protection of women and girls (Costa Rica and DRC have initiated discussions with states on a new international treaty to end violence against women and girls).

March 2023: During ID with SRSG CAAC (52 HRC) Costa Rica delivered a national statement:
– We condemn attacks on schools
– Given frequency of attacks on schools, what tools can be used to ensure the protection of children?
