February 2017: Bede and Gisela met with Dep. Ambassador in GVA. He seemed very engaged with issue, although the issue was clearly new to him until our outreach. Sounded positive.
March 2017: Attended Buenos Aires Conference on Safe Schools.
April 2017: GCPEA wrote to Foreign Minister. GCPEA wrote to Foreign Minister.
September 2017: Meeting request in Geneva pending.
July 2018: STC provded trainings on the SSD and SC’s work on the protection of schools in conflict. Both in Colombia, with programmes colleagues, the “border team” working on the humanitarian crisis at the border the Venezuela and the field staff in Arauca. And with other LAC colleagues – among them people from Honduras, Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador and Nicaragua.Nicaragua: in the current situation of violence in the country one of the issues of concerns is that of occupation of univeristies by the protesters, with consequent attacks by the nicaraguan police forces and paramilitares. In Nicaragua, adolescents of 16 y/o are already enrolled in the university. On the other side, secondary schools are being used by pro-governamental groups to reclute adolescents. Marta, our advocacy and comms colleague in Nicaragua is interested in using the SSD and the Guidelines as advocacy tool, towards universities, the Episcopal Conference which is leading the negotiations in the country, and the Interamerican Human Rights Commission.
May 2019: Participated in the Third International Conference in Palma, and announced endorsement of the Safe Schools Declaration.
