Details

2015: Present at the First International Conference on the SSD in Oslo.

November 2016: Co-host of Addis workshop. Strongly engaged and supportive. Made excellent presentations and facilitation during workshop.

January – March 2017: Member of Core Group in Geneva but did not attend meetings and not responsive to emails.

March 2017: Attended Buenos Aires Conference on Safe Schools. Provided moderator – the facilitator from the Addis workshop. A strong advocate.

June 2017: Save the Children Addis assisted the ambassador of Zambia to chair a Peace and Security Council Open Session Debate on ending child marriage. One of the recommendations that emerged from the debate was endorsement of the Declaration (more detail under ‘Visibility’ below).

September 2017: GCPEA sent a letter to the ambassador in New York asking to raise the issue on attacks and military use, draw attention to the Declaration and the Guidelines and to mention AU call to endorse during the Open Debate on children and armed conflict. Zambia delivered a statement in occasion of the Save the Children Pan Africa and AU Liaison Office in Addis Abeba high level dialogue to protect education from attacks and military use and to promote the implementation of the Declaration and Guidelines.

February 2018: In advance of the End Violence Solutions Summit in Stockholm on 14-15 February, GCPEA issued letter to Zambia, calling on them to highlight the Declaration during the summit.

May 2019: Participated in the Third International Conference in Palma.

January 2020:Human Rights Watch made a submission to the Committee on the Rights of the Child regarding Zambia. It includes a suggestion that the Committee congratulate Zambia for endorsing the Safe Schools Declaration.

October 2021: cosponsored UNSRC2601.

Sierra Leone, Zambia, and Norway: In November 2016, Sierra Leone, Zambia, and Norway co-hosted a regional workshop focused on the implementation of the Guidelines by African Union States. Representatives from ministries of defense and education and the national armed forces of 14 of the 17 endorsing African States met to exchange good practices and experiences.
