India: Naxals attack under-construction school, CHC building

India Today, September 14, 2017

Raipur, Sep 15 (PTI) – Naxals damaged a school and a community health centre (CHC) being constructed in Chhattisgarhs insurgency-hit Narayanpur district, police said today.

The incident took place at Kohkameta under Kurusnar police station area yesterday, district Superintendent of Police Santosh Singh told PTI.

The Naxals damaged walls and plinths of the two buildings, being built at a cost of Rs one crore, the officer said.

Kohkameta is 30 km from Narayanpur district headquarters, inside a forest in Abhujmad region, considered a Naxal hotbed, he said. The district is around 350 km from Raipur.

The rebels fear that infrastructure development will end their dominance in the tribal areas and therefore target school buildings, hospitals, roads and bridges in Bastar region, the SP said.

The CHC and school at Kohkameta will cater to around a dozen villages in the area, he said.

A police team was sent to the area and a search operation has been launched, the SP said.
