Highlights

Details

November 2018: GCPEA met with the First and Third Secretary in the Mission in New York. Since it was a first meeting with Malawi, GCPEA provided general overview of the Safe Schools Declaration and the Guidelines and encouraged attendance to the Spain conference. They were interested to know if the Declaration applies for non-state armed groups as perpetrators of attacks on education. They promised to brief the ambassador and take up the issue with capital.

February 2019: GCPEA met with the Deputy Permanent Representative of the Mission of Malawi. It was a very brief meeting. The DPR requested all necessary information by email and promised to hold a second meeting with GCPEA to prepare himself to brief capital on the initiative. He asked for the pros and cons of endorsement, and which of GCPEA’s member organisations have field presence in Malawi. Follow-up: GCPEA followed up in writing, sharing a letter for the Foreign Minister, providing links to GCPEA resources and advising that Plan International, Save the Children, and UNICEF has offices in Malawi.

May 2019: Participated in the Third International Conference in Palma.

June 2019: GCPEA wrote to the Ministry of Education representative, who had attended the Third International Conference in Palma, to share the endorsement procedure and the template letter.

July 2019: GCPEA (Zama) met with the First Secretary from the mission in New York who seemed personally invested. After his first meeting with GCPEA in December 2018, he had made a positive recommendation to capital. He promised to raise the Declaration again with capital and felt that endorsement would be possible.

November 2022: Endorsed the Political Declaration on Strengthening the Protection of Civilians from the Humanitarian Consequences Arising from the Use of Explosive Weapons in Populated Areas (EWIPA) on 18 November during an International Conference hosted by Ireland, the leader and penholder behind the Declaration.
