Examples of Good Practice

What, if anything, the regional body has done to protect education and/or implement any of the 8 commitments outlined in the Declaration.

The African Union’s Peace and Security Council has, over the years, welcomed the Declaration. For example, at its 994th meeting on May 11, 202137, the Council took “note of the growing number of AU Member States who have signed and endorsed the Safe Schools Declaration and its Guidelines as a non-binding framework assisting States in undertaking their respective obligations under international law.”
The African Union Doctrine on Peace Support Operations, adopted in January 2021, directly refers to the central commitment of the Safe Schools Declaration, namely, to “ensure that schools are not attacked and used for
military purposes”. In effect, this is a prohibition against using schools for military purposes by regional peacekeepers.
